Scope and Content

Scrapbook contains newspaper cuttings (both local and national press), photographs, memorial service leaflets, Easter and Christmas cards, notices of social events involving local landed gentry, letters, telegrams and ephemera. The compiler is Frances Anne Hughes (died 19/03/1923) of Bodhyfryd, Abergele - daughter of H.R. Hughes and Lady Florentia Hughes of Kinmel Hall. The family has the remainder of the series of scrapbooks.

The subject matter of the scrapbook reflects the time of its compilation and includes much related to the First World War and its effect both on North Wales society, largely in the loss of sons, and on the wider world. It also includes local and national weddings and social events, church matters and so on. Places of interest referred to in the scrapbook include Abergele, Llanddulas, Bodelwyddan Castle, Gwrych Castle, Coed Coch Estate and the village of St George.

Included in the album were original sketches of the belfry of the old church at Penmachno and of a scene of a heavily-laden man stopping to pat the head of a small child in a village street. Also included were loose photographs of a group [?Abergele Field Club] around the cairn on the summit of Snowdon, the 'garden house' at Kinmel Park, the hunt gathered outside Kinmel Hall when it was a 'Rheuma Spa', a large group [?Abergele Field Club] outside a substantial ivy-covered house with crenellations, 4 views of an unidentified mansion set in lawns, a postcard of Kinmel Lodge at St George's, interior view of the Parish Church of St George decorated for Easter, view of a lane with the caption 'Glascoed, the entrance to Bryn y Pin pass, 1907', and group at Matock Bath in Derbyshire, with caption 'Abergele Annual Picnic, June 25th 1913, Matlock Bath and Belper, organised by Mr S B Rogers, stationmaster'.
