Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
General registration of ships began in the 18th century, when all ships with a deck and burden of more than 15 tons had to be registered with the Customs and Excise at their homeport. Many ships were registered in the port of Aberystwyth, which encompassed all the smaller ports in Cardiganshire north of Newport, Pembrokeshire, and in the southern part of Merionethshire, including the port of Aberdyfi (Aberdovey).
