Scope and Content

Papers on mining accidents and relief including those of the Central Association, the Lancashire and Cheshire Relief Society and the Northumberland Miners Mutual Aid Confident Association, 1865 to 1906.

Also a small group of account books and journals dated 1794 to 1833 including by Andrew Campbell with George Campbell's papers, but of which he has little knowledge. One account book was, perhaps, compiled by a Lancashire woman. The others belonged to Miss Leigh of Wigan, sister of Sir Robert Holt Leigh of Hindley Hall (died 1841) and daughter of Holt Leigh (1730-1785), MP for Wigan.

Administrative / Biographical History

George Campbell was Secretary of the Central Association for Dealing with Distress Caused by Mining Accidents and the Lancashire and Cheshire Miners Permanent Relief Society.
