Lubumbashi Falls collection

Contains sepia prints, mostly on some white background; the measurements are taken to the edge of the paper, not the photograph.
These photographs were the property of the Reverend John William Peppercorn, probably acquired between 1921 and 1923. As two (numbers 1 and 2) have the name A.G. Cooke on them, it is possible that these, and perhaps others, were taken by Mr Cooke and purchased by Mr Peppercorn. They do not relate to the work of the Mission, but are handsome views of the Lubumbashi Falls in the Katanga Province of the Belgian Congo.

The Reverend John William Peppercorn was working for the South African Church Railway Mission, and covered Northern Rhodesia through the Belgian Congo. He lived and travelled in a caboose (a railway van hitched to a train) but also used a bicycle while the caboose was put into a siding. According to Ellison (1930) the Mission began in 1892 with the work of the Reverend Douglas Ellison and by 1930 was serving railway workers and scattered families along lines through South Africa and Rhodesia and extending Northwards.
