Administrative / Biographical History

Lobegott Friedrich Constantin von Tischendorf, 1815-1874 , orientalist and Biblical critic, was born in Legenfeld near Leipzig, Germany, on 18 January 1815 . He was educated at the Plauen Gymnasium (grammar school) in Plauen, Germany, and at the University of Leipzig, where he studied theology, specialising in the New Testament. After travelling through Europe and Asia studying biblical manuscripts, he became Professor for Biblical Palaeography at the University of Leipzig in 1859 . He was ennobled by Tsar Alexander II in 1869  and died in Leipzig on 07 December 1874 . Samuel Davidson, 1806-1898 , theologian and biblical scholar, was born in September 1806  at Kellswater, near Ballymena, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. He was Professor of Biblical Criticism at the Royal Academical Institution, Belfast, Northern Ireland, from 1831 to 1841 and Professor of Biblical Literature and Ecclesiastical History at Lancashire Independent College, Manchester, England, from 1843 to 1857. In 1862, he was elected Scripture Examiner at University College, London, England. He died in 1898 . Gildemeister, Johannes, 1812-1890 , was appointed Professor of Protestant Theology and Oriental Languages at Marburg University, Germany, in 1845, and founded the Department of Sanskrit. He taught in Marburg from 1845 to 1859.

The records were in the care of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland until August 1974. The letters had been donated by Anne Jane Davidson, the Samuel Davidson’s daughter.
