Administrative / Biographical History

Aberdeen Labour Party sponsored its first candidate, in South Aberdeen, in the general election of 1892, though its first Labour victory did not come until 1918, when Frank H. Rose won North Aberdeen. The development of the Labour Party in the city is bound up with that of Aberdeen Trades Council, the two organisations meeting as combined bodies until 1935. At this time, the Scottish Council of the Labour Party and the General Council of the Scottish Trades Union Congress recommended that Trades and Labour Councils should cease to meet as combined bodies, and that instead Trades Councils and Labour Parties (or industrial and political sections) function separately, each being completely and finally responsible for its own business (William Diack, History of the Trades Council and the Trades Union Movement in Aberdeen, Aberdeen: Aberdeen University Press, 1939, p253).
