Scope and Content

Collections for a history of the family of Wharton, compiled by Edward Ross Wharton. The papers fall into two series: 'Collections', i.e. copies or abstracts of records of all kinds (with references to the record and notes), and 'History', i.e. annals, not a connected history in literary form.

Administrative / Biographical History

Edward Ross Wharton (1844-1896), Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, was a philologer and genealogist. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Acquisition Information

The papers were deposited in the Library by Mrs Wharton, 1897-8, and after her death were presented by her executors in 1899.
