Henry Rudland Rhodesia [i.e. Zimbabwe] photographs, 1914-15

Collection of loose prints consisting of fifteen snapshots, most measuring approximately 85 x 55 mm., and eight postcards (original prints). The photographs have explanatory captions on the reverse; the postcards, which are stamped and postmarked on the print rather than on the reverse, were sent to Rudland's parents, Alderman and Mrs. H. Rudland of Sunderland, from the British South Africa Police Depot at Salisbury. Photographers unknown, but probably Henry Rudland and others.
Accompanying the collection is a letter to Sir Harry Wilson of the Royal Colonial Institute dated 23/5/18, thanking him for an unspecified invitation and donating these photographs. At this date Rudland appears to have been attached to the 3rd Durham Light Infantry, but no earlier information about his career apart from the fact that he served with the BSAP and was in hospital in Salisbury in 1914, has been unearthed.

Henry Rudland was an amateur photographer. He was a member of the British South African Company Police in 1914, but was wounded during the First World War and spent some time in Salisbury (now Harare) Hospital. In 1915 he served in German South West Africa (now Namibia) and was attached to the 3rd Durham Light Infantry in 1918.
