Scope and Content

Papers relating to the South African Defence and Aid Fund. Includes: Western Cape Chairman's reports 1961-1964; newsletters, 1961-1965; memorandum on effects of Proclamation 400 in the Transkei; affidavits and case reports; press cuttings on detainees in 1960 and African National Congress trials in 1964; special report on South African resettlement transit camps; Snyman Commission Report, RP/51/1963.
Other papers include: manuscripts by H. Jack Simons and Donald Molteno on the Pass Laws; South African Institute of Race Relations report on disturbances in African schools, 1964; Black Sash (Western Cape) monthly reports, November 1964 - March 1965.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Blundell was a member of the Liberal Party of South Africa (LPSA), and Chairman of the Western Cape Defence and Aid Fund from its inception after the arrests during the State of Emergency in 1960 until its proscription in 1965. An Englishman in the country since the early 1950s, Blundell was also banned from the Fund and was deported in 1965 by the apartheid government.
