Sir John Moreton papers

Correspondence, diaries, photographs, reports and ephemera from Moreton's postings in Kenya, Nigeria, Saigon, Malta and the United States. Subjects include Kenyan emergency; the Mau Mau; Rhodesia / Zimbabwe elections 1980; discussions between British Government and members of Gold Coast goverment, 1957; Dom Mintoff; Alan Lennox-Boyd draft speeches, addresses, tours 1957-1959; handwritten diaries of Sir Thomas Lloyd's tour of East African, Mauritius, Somaliland, Aden and Cyprus, 1949.

Sir John Moreton was a distinguished British diplomat. He joined the former Colonial Service in 1946, and was closely involved in discussions with former colonies in Africa which were seeking self-government en route to independence. Between 1953 and 1955, he was posted to Kenya , where he was seconded to the government as secretary of the Colony Emergency Committee. He was Counsellor in the High Commission in Lagos between 1961 and 1964, following Nigeria’s independence. In 1968 he was appointed British Ambassador in Saigon. He served as British High Commissioner to Malta (1972-74), and his final two postings were in the United States, first as Deputy Permanent Representative, with the personal rank of Ambassador, UK Mission to the United Nations in New York, and finally as Minister in Washington.
