Scope and Content

With the exception of File SZ/RCP/3 the contents of the series are fragmentary and do not afford a comprehensive study of the work of the Commission. File SZ/RCP/3 contains a copy of the published text of the Commission's first report. Solly Zuckerman also received copies of later reports, which are in that part of his personal library bequeathed to UEA and now joined with his Archive.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution was set up on 20 February 1970 under the chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby to advise on matters, both national and international, concerning the pollution of the environment; on the adequacy of research in this field; and the future possibilities of danger to the environment [First Report, London, HMSO, 1971, Cmnd 4585]. Solly Zuckerman was a founder member, and his membership was renewed in 1973, for one year. Zuckerman appears to have also been a member of the Sub-Committee on Research.
