Scope and Content

Contains: (1) Material connected with his biography of Thomas Perronet Thompson, including: (i) His edited version of Edith Thompson's biography, chapters 1 and 2 (52 ff.) and a chapter on 1829 (34 ff.), with carbon copies of the first and last; (ii) Discarded pages (not consecutive) of his own biography, containing material not in the final, published, version (109 ff.); (iii) Notes, copies of letters, photographs used in the biography, copies of articles on the Perronets, and other material; (2) Papers written by L.G. Johnson, namely Thomas Thompson, merchant and banker of Hull (46 ff.), and J.G. Lockhart and "the Bonaparte of free trade" (13 ff.), 2 copies of each; (3) 33 letters to L.G. Johnson from various people, including publishers; (4) Printed material, namely Hull news supplement, 27 June, 1896; Sierra Leone studies, New Series. no.1, Dec. 1953; and Cottingham Local History Society journal, vol.1, pt.48, Nov. 1958.

Administrative / Biographical History

Leonard George Johnson, a graduate of Sheffield University, was a leading figure in the adult education movement in Yorkshire. His lecturing career began in 1925, under the Miners' Welfare Scheme, and continued, from 1929, at the University of Leeds, where he held a number of posts, before retiring as a Senior Lecturer in Economics and Commerce in 1959. He died in September 1969
