Papers of Edward Morgan Humphreys, 1882-1955

The collection consists of the following :

The family trees of Richard Humphreys and the Rev. Edward Morgan of Dyffryn Ardudwy, Merionethshire.

Books, short stories and articles by E. Morgan Humphreys - fictional and non-fictional. Plays along with poetry written in both English and Welsh.

Papers relating to the work of E. Morgan Humphreys as a journalist - mainly notebooks under the headings of various newspapers and volumes of newspaper cuttings.

Correspondence addressed to the Rev. Evan Evans of Walton Park, Liverpool from family members mainly, 1862-1923. Correspondence addressed to E. Morgan Humphreys from family, friends and colleagues, 1899-1954 and addressed to Mrs E. M. Humphreys (ne Annie Evans), 1903-1925. Also bundles of letters on various subjects such as the editorship of Y Goleuad and liberalism in Wales. A group of miscellaneous letters to and from such people as Gwilym Hiraethog and Eben Fardd date from 1840-1901.

Papers of Rev. Evan H. Evans which contain sermons, addresses and a diary for 1887.

The items amongst the miscellaneous group are varied in nature. Amongst them are photographs of E. M. Humphreys, Welsh ministers, religious leaders and politicians such as Gladstone in 1892. A book of assessments for the relief of the poor in the parish of Dolbenmaen, Caernarfonshire 1823-1833; notes; memoirs and essays.

Edward Morgan Humphreys was born in Dyffryn Ardudwy, Merionethshire. A journalist and a novelist, he worked for Y Genedl Gymreig, The North Wales Observer, Y Goleuad, and wrote for theLiverpool Daily Post and Manchester Guardian under the pseudonym, "Celt". It is evident from his literary work that he was aware of the need to provide Welsh language material for young people. Amongst his numerous publications are : Dirgelwch yr Anialwch, Rhwng Rhyfeloedd and Yr Etifedd Coll. He also contributed articles for Gwyr Enwog Gynt.

The papers were received by the Department of Manuscripts on two separate occassions, and as a result have been catalogued as two separate groups within the General Collecion of Bangor Manuscripts. The papers have been arranged according to type and then chronologically within those groups.

The second group of papers were transferred from the Rare Books Department of the Library of the University of Wales Bangor.
