Ellis Owen (1789-1868), farmer, antiquary and poet, was born at Cefn-y-meysydd Isaf, Eifionydd, Caernarvonshire, where he spent his entire life. In 1846 he founded Cymdeithas Llenorion Eifionydd at Cefn-y-meysydd in order to promote the area's literary culture, a society which attracted many of the leading lights of the day in that field. A collection of Owen's poetical and prose works was published posthumously in 1877 under the title Cell Meudwy.
