Scope and Content

Comprises: (1) Leeds College of Art papers, ca. 1910-1961, including administrative correspondence, the Principal's annual reports, miscellaneous annual and other reports, notably one of an inspection in 1910, 1946 Centenary material, proposals for courses and qualifications, and a printed prospectus for 1955/56; (2) Leeds School of Music papers, ca. 1903-1961, including reports and administrative correspondence, and considerable material relating to the Yorkshire Training College of Housecraft and Old Students Association; (3) City of Leeds Training College papers, ca. 1913-1941, including administrative papers and correspondence, conference proceedings, the Principal's reports, and especially papers and reports concerning the Training College Inquiry between 1913 and 1918, with some press-cuttings and papers relating to various resulting staff resignations.

Administrative / Biographical History

Leeds Education Committee was formed as a result of A.J. Balfour's Education Act of 1902. The City of Leeds Training College for teachers was founded in 1907 and later in the twentieth century became part of the University of Leeds. The Leeds College of Art and Design was founded in 1846. The Leeds College of Music was founded in 1880 and is now one of the largest of such colleges in this country.
