Scope and Content

The collection comprises of material relating to the United States Navy Antarctic Expedition (Operation Deep Freeze), 1964-1965.

Administrative / Biographical History

Lachlan Maxwell Forbes was born on 19 January 1910 in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia. He was educated at Edinburgh University and King's College, Cambridge, where he read archaeology and anthropology and English literature. In 1935, he entered the Colonial Service as a cadet district officer in Uganda, later serving as district commissioner in Jinja. In 1942, he married Evelyn Ferrar, daughter of Hartley Travers Ferrar, geologist on the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott). Between 1955 and 1972, Forbes served as editor of the Polar Record and became curator of the Scott Polar Research Institute's Museum in Cambridge. In 1965, he was appointed the official United Kingdom observer in Antarctica attached to the United States Operation Deep Freeze. In 1972, he was appointed deputy director of Cambridgeshire County Council. He died on 19 October 1987.
