Dictates of James Pillans by Archibald Flint: 'Philosophia Peripatetica'

This material is held atEdinburgh University Library Heritage Collections

Scope and Content

Labelled 'II' and 'III', the location of any other volumes from this series is unknown. Each volume bears a number of illuatrations, largely, though not exclusively, around a theme of motion/impact, which may reflect the nature of the subject of the notes themselves. Flint uses these to decorate title pages and introductory sections, some mimicking as decorated initials within illuminated manuscripts.

'Philosophia Peripatetica' is also known as Aristotlean philosophy, referring to a mode of delivery of lecturing while walking.

Administrative / Biographical History

Archibald Flint graduated from the University in 1673, having studied under Regent James Pillans. He may have been the same Archibald Flint who was the son of the sister of Rev. James Nairn (1629-1678).
