Administrative / Biographical History

The Department of the Lord Chancellor is responsible for the organisation of the courts system and the control of appointments to the judiciary. The Peace Act 1979 divides England and Wales into "commission areas", each having a "commission of the peace" or Advisory Committee to govern the appointment of magistrates. The commission areas are sub-divided into petty sessions areas (or magistrates' courts). As well as handling criminal cases, they have a role in civil jurisdiction, including family law, care proceedings, and the licensing of public houses, off-licences, and betting and gaming establishments.
