The collection consists of notes, articles and typescripts of various books on linguistic development and illiteracy, as well as tests connected with Professor Lewis' research with deaf children.
Additional material relating to this collection and to that of Professor Lewis's wife, the novelist Hilda Lewis, (See GB 159 Lw H) has been accessioned and awaits cataloguing.
After studying at University College, London, Lewis came to the then University College, Nottingham in the 1920s. In 1940 he was appointed Vice-Principal of Goldsmith's College, London but returned to Nottingham seven years later. He was Director of the Institute of Education in the University from 1947 until his retirement in 1963. During this time he undertook a great deal of research into language and the development of speech in children, with particular reference to deaf children. He continued to write until his death in 1971.
