Scope and Content

The records of the club are pasted into a single volume and primarily concentrate on membership matters. Although details of gameplay and strategy, arrangement of championships, the volumes include newspaper cuttings giving results of three tournaments held with clubs in Leicester and Northampton in 1885.

The collection contains a single volume containing: an 1858 printed copy of the club rules, analysis of accounts including a record of subscription payments, names of members present at meetings, newspaper cuttings reporting on the club, printed leaflets announcing forthcoming events and news, and a printed bill advertising the Counties Chess Association Congress held in Nottingham in 1886.

Administrative / Biographical History

Little is known of the origins, history or fate of the Nottingham Chess Club. According to the 1858 copy of the club rules, the club was established on 16 October 1829 and met at Bromley House, Nottingham. In 1858, the club adhered to George Walker's treatise on chess and called upon members present to vote in the event of a dispute during a match.

Arrangement
