Scope and Content

Although the majority of the deeds relate to the large south west Surrey estate accumulated subsequent to Christopher More's purchase of the manor of Loseley, 1506-1508 (see introduction to section A), a significant minority relate to estates in other counties. Of these latter, many came into family hands by marriage; some relate to executorships or trusteeships by family members; others are of unknown provenance, and may include 'strays' introduced perhaps by the antiquarian William Bray, documents entrusted to the care of a member of the family and never reclaimed (see 'executorships, wardships and trusteeships' for LM/357/53, section G.9.17.4) receipt for deeds to be held in trust, and for accompanying deeds), or documents acquired for antiquarian interest by James More Molyneux FSA (1805-1874) or others.

The following is a detailed summary of the contents:

LM/SectionG/1 SECTION G.1: FAMILY SETTLEMENTS AND INHERITANCE RELATING TO DESCENT OF LOSELEY ESTATE 1535-1832
For a full picture of family arrangements under wills and settlements, it is essential to refer also to records listed in the series 'family settlements and records relating to the descent of the Loseley estate' in section A.1. Reference should also be made to the series 'mortgages and leases of main estate' below, particularly for evidence of the management of the estate during the 17th cent, including provision for Sir Robert More (1581-1626) during his father Sir George's lifetime, and the minority of Sir William More, Bart (1643-1684), son of Sir Poynings More, during which his mother Elizabeth is accused of having done as much as was possible 'to spoil to an engaged estate, except she could have sold the fee and inheritance as well as waste and trifle away the revenues thereof' (James Gresham in LM/COR/6/90). For the marriages of Elizabeth More to Richard Polsted then John Wolley, see section G.6.4. For other settlements and estates of More daughters, see section G.7.

LM/SectionG/2 SECTION G.2: MORTGAGES AND LEASES OF MAIN ESTATE 1604-1850 Principal mortgages and leases of the Loseley estate (south west Surrey manors, Loseley house, manor and estate) are listed here. Reference should also be made to 'settlements' above, section G.1, and also section A, for a picture of the financial management of the More estates. Leases and mortgages of minor parts of the estate are listed under individual properties (except where no other title exists).

LM/SectionG/2/1 G.2.1: MORTGAGES 1604-1721
The records are arranged in order of the first mortgage of each property.

LM/SectionG/2/2 G.2.2: LEASES OF LOSELEY HOUSE AND MAIN ESTATE 1691-1850

LM/SectionG/3 SECTION G.3: TITLE TO MANORIAL ESTATES (1200)-1857
Documents in this series comprise the main title deeds to the manors which formed the Loseley estate, including early title deeds to smaller holdings apparently within these manors. The series also contains leases of the manors by the Mores and More-Molyneux, and copies of court roll, leases and grants of manorial waste when the manors were under the family's lordship. Further deeds relating to the Mores' tenure of these estates are to be found listed under 'settlements' above (section G.1), and under 'main estate leases and mortgages' (section G.2). Further documents relating to title and management of the manors are also listed under the relevant sub-series of 'manorial and hundred records' in section A.3.

LM/SectionG/3/1 G.3.1: MANOR OF LOSELEY (ACQUIRED 1506-1508) (1200)-1546 The manor, held in the early 13th cent by Richard de Dol, was divided in the 14th cent. After the death of Joan de Bures, daughter of Robert de Dol, one moiety descended to her son William de Bures and the other to John Norton, great-grandson of her sister Margaret. The Norton moiety passed to the Sidneys and thence to Christopher More in 1506. The other moiety was in the Strode family from 1429 to 1481 when it passed to John Westbrooke and thence to Christopher More in 1508. For records of the manor court and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 1335-1781, see section A.3.1.

LM/SectionG/3/2 G.3.2: MANOR OF COMPTON WESTBURY (ACQUIRED 1535) 1315-1839 For records of the manor court and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 1550-1890, see section A.3.2. Other deeds and papers relating to the patronage of Compton church are listed in section A.5.8 and section G.4.8.

LM/SectionG/3/3 G.3.3: MANOR OF POLSTED (ACQUIRED 1558) (PRE 1287)-1592 For records of the manor court and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 15th cent-1781, see section A.3.3.

LM/SectionG/3/4 G.3.4: MANOR OF CATTESHALL (ACQUIRED 1565) 1344-1641
For records of the manor court and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, (1279)-1738, see section A.3.4. See sections G.1 and G.2 for 17th cent settlement and mortgage documents of the Mores relating to Catteshall.

LM/SectionG/3/5 G.3.5: MANOR OF TYTING, ST MARTHA'S (ACQUIRED 1567) 1568-1601
William More and Henry Weston acquired a 99 year lease on Tyting in Feb 1567 (VCH vol III, p.105). For further papers, late 16th cent, see section A.3.5.

LM/SectionG/3/6 G.3.6: MANOR OF PICCARDS, INCLUDING MANOR OF PEPER HAROW (ACQUIRED 1586-1600) 1323-1838
Sir William More purchased portions of the manor from Pexall Brocas between 1586 and 1600 (VCH vol III, pp4, 9). For further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 1320-1777, see section A.3.6. For correspondence concerning More's purchase, see LM/COR/3/545, 550, 553-4.

LM/SectionG/3/7 G.3.7: MANOR AND HUNDRED OF GODALMING (ACQUIRED 1601) 1325-1852
For records of the manor and hundred courts and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, c.1327-1866, see section A.3.7.

LM/SectionG/3/8 G.3.8: HASLEMERE MANOR AND BOROUGH (ACQUIRED 1601) c.1214-1852
Tenure of the manor of Haslemere appears to have been held with that of the manor of Godalming, until Haslemere was separately sold in 1784. The manor so named was coterminous with the borough, while the rest of the parish was formed out of the manor of Godalming (however, early deeds citing Haslemere as the parish are listed here). For records of the manor court and further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 1625-1785, see section A.3.8; for papers relating to parliamentary elections in the borough, 1640-1780, see section D.3. Further deeds probably but not clearly associated with the Haslemere manorial tenure, 1480-1776, are listed in section G.4.12.

LM/SectionG/3/9 G.3.9: MANOR OF WITLEY (ACQUIRED 1605) 1560-1857
The manor of Witley was a Crown manor during most of the 16th century, both Christopher and William More sometime acting as stewards. Keepership of Witley Park appears to have been granted separately, until it was granted in farm and then outright to Elizabeth Egerton (daughter of William More, formerly Elizabeth Wolley), from 1596. In 1599 the manor was granted to Elizabeth Egerton and on her death in 1600, it was inherited by her son Francis Wolley. Wolley sold the manor to Sir George More in 1605. In 1613, the park was sold to Sir Edward More, and the manor to Henry Bell of Rake. (Descent quoted from VCH Vol III). For extracts from court baron of the manor of Witley, 1585-1586, see LM/210, section A.3.7.10; for receipts of rents, 16th cent, see LM/1087/6/box 1, section F.27. For records relating to stewardship of the manor, see section B.1.22. See also section E.8. For notes on valuation of the manor, see LM/938, section A.6.9.6, and for mortgage, see G.2.1.2. For notes on a lease of the park, see MS Lb.474 Z/407 sec.3.2.3.

LM/SectionG/3/10 G.3.10: MANORS OF PUTTENHAM PRIORY AND PUTTENHAM BURY (ACQUIRED 1760-1761) 1759-1761
For further papers relating to title to the manor and its administration, 1708-1762, see section A.3.9.

LM/SectionG/4 SECTION G.4: TITLE TO INDIVIDUAL MORE AND MORE MOLYNEUX ESTATES IN SURREY 13TH CENT-1852
Deeds in this series relate to properties acquired directly by members of the More and More Molyneux family of Loseley (rather than through settlements or inheritance through marriage etc). They are listed in chronological order of acquisition where this is known (or evident). Leases and mortgages of the estates by the More and More Molyneux family have also been included in this series (hence the grouping together of properties which may have a differing descent of title prior to family acquisition).

LM/SectionG/4/1 G.4.1: PROPERTY ON THE LOSELEY ESTATE PROBABLY INCLUDING DEMESNE (ACQUIRED FROM 1506), ARTINGTON AND COMPTON [13TH CENT]-1848
It has in most cases not been possible to identify clear descent of title in the properties described in the subseries below. These groupings are an attempt to make the deeds more accessible, but in the absence of original deed bundles, connections are likely to have been lost between properties which do not consistently bear the same name (eg when amalgamated as farms with tenants' names). In a number of cases below there is no obvious association of title of the deeds with the Loseley estate (eg those relating to Braboeuf estates), either by purchase or subsequent transaction; these deeds have nevertheless been included, at the end of this subseries. Close or adjacent properties to those described in this subseries (eg Buryfields, St Nicholas) may be listed in separate subseries or under Shalford or Compton. For further papers relating to estates in Artington, St Catherine's Hill, Polsted and Compton see sections A.5.1, A.5.4 and A.5.10.

LM/SectionG/4/2 G.4.2: BURYFIELDS, ST NICHOLAS, GUILDFORD (ACQUIRED 1510) 1294-1680
For other documents relating to Buryfields, see section A.5.4.

LM/SectionG/4/3 G.4.3: LAND IN THAMES DITTON AND LONG DITTON (ACQUIRED FROM 1523) 1523-1610

LM/SectionG/4/4 G.4.4: ESTATES IN MERSTHAM, LEATHERHEAD AND WARNHAM, SUSSEX (ACQUIRED 1524) c.1294-1551
The Merstham property was apparently conveyed in c.1558: see LM/347/38/1-2, section G.3.3. For further papers see section A.5.2.

LM/SectionG/4/5 G.4.5: ESTATES IN SHALFORD (ACQUIRED FROM C.1526) 1406-1606

LM/SectionG/4/6 G.4.6: THE ANGEL, GUILDFORD (ACQUIRED 1527) 1527-1545
For other documents relating to the Angel, see section A.5.3.

LM/SectionG/4/9 G.4.9: TIMBER FROM FRENCHES, WORPLESDON 1536

LM/SectionG/4/10 G.4.10: GOSDENS, SHALFORD (ACQUIRED BY 1537) 1551-1609 Gosdens is listed among the estates of Sir Christopher More in LM/1592, section A.2.

LM/SectionG/4/11 G.4.10: [?CHINTHURST], SHALFORD 1508-1546
Chinthurst had been acquired by c.1537 (see LM/1592, section A.2).

LM/SectionG/4/12 G.4.12: ESTATES IN HASLEMERE (ACQUIRED FROM C.1537 ONWARDS) 1480-1776
The deeds in this sub series probably relate largely to the Mores' tenure of the manor and borough of Haslemere, although this has not been clearly established. Some land in Haslemere 'bought of Thomas Pope' is recorded in the list of estates of Sir Christopher More of 1537, ref LM/1592, section A.2. The documents are listed in chronological order only, and have not been further subdivided to attempt to reflect title to individual properties. It is evident that properties were changing hands with a view to enfranchising the purchaser in the Haslemere borough elections (see LM/358/34/1-2 and LM/358/80/1-2 below), but the status of the Mores' tenure at the time of transactions is unclear in many cases. For further deeds and papers relating to the manor and its administration see sections A.3.8 and G.3.8.

Administrative / Biographical History

This catalogue describes deeds of the More and More Molyneux family of Loseley Park, Artington. For a full introduction to the family, its estates and records see catalogue LM.

Arrangement

While on deposit for cataloguing at the Public Record Office in 1908, all deeds among the Loseley Manuscripts were extracted and arranged in one long chronological sequence bearing the references LM/334-359.

Aside from a small amount of re-numbering when selected deeds relating to some estates in other counties were removed from the sequence, the documents still bear their original, chronologically-determined references, but the following list is an attempt at restoring some organisational coherence to reflect the growth of the Mores' and More Molyneux' estates, their financial management and their inheritance, and to improve access to title to particular properties within the estates.

Although some cross-referencing has been given, researchers should be aware that many documents closely associated with the following deeds are listed under section A (More family estates) and section E (estates associated with executorships and trusteeships).

In the case of deeds where there is no clear provenance, many have been added to series which include title to properties in the same parish (or county outside Surrey); this includes instances where there is a large time gap before title of the Mores and More Molyneuxes in 16th and subsequent centuries.
