Scope and Content

Photocopy of typescript memoirs of Caradoc Ellis when employed as a diver during the second world war along with typescripts by him on the history of Llanfairfechan, its properties, industries, characters and religious causes. Also, works regarding Abergwyngregyn and Penmaen-mawr and Welsh sea captains. Amongst these typescripts there are a few postcards and photographs.

Typescript transcripts of documents e.g. Llanfairfechan local board minutes, 1872-1886, deeds and sale catalogues of properties in Llanfairfechan, Penmaen-mawr urban district council, 1895-1897, Dwygyfylchi local board minutes, 1866-1894 etc.

The collection also consists of manuscript material collated by Caradoc Ellis. Price lists belonging to Josiah Hughes, ironmonger of High Street, Bangor, late 19th century; programmes of literary meetings in Llanfairfechan and Abergwyngregyn, 1867-1885 along with receipts relating to Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Llanfairfechan, 1928; prescription books of a Llanfairfechan chemist, 1877-1884; stock books and shop ledgers of shops in Llanfairfechan and Penmaen-mawr, 1916-1948; maps and plans, in particular of the Bryn y Neuadd estate in Llanfairfechan.

Administrative / Biographical History

During the second world war, Caradoc Ellis was employed as a diver in small salvage crafts used in laying buoys, targets and salvaging various types of air crafts throughout Britain. This collection testifies that he took an active interest in the history of Llanfairfechan and its surrounding area.

He resided in at least two homes in Llanfairfechan, Bod Feirig and Eirionedd. He died early in 1956.

No further biographical material was available at time of compilation of description.

Arrangement

There is no apparent system of arrangement. The papers have been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts
