Scope and Content

The manuscript text of Henry Turner's essay is given in 133 pages of fair copy (with some annotations and corrections) in a bound quarto sized volume. It is entitled: 'An essay on the nature and design of sacrifices under the mosaic law and the influence which Jewish ideas and language concerning them, had upon the language of the New Testament.' A note at the end gives the place and date of creation as Nottingham, 1 September 1820.

Administrative / Biographical History

Henry Turner was born in 1792 and became a Unitarian minister, first in Bradford (1813) and then in Nottingham (1817), where the Turner family played a significant role in the nineteenth-century history of High Pavement Chapel. Turner's sermons were published in 1822.
