Administrative / Biographical History

John Bayley was an author and literary critic who was a professor at Oxford for many years. Married the author Iris Murdoch in 1956, and stayed with her until her death in 1999. He published a trilogy of books on his life with the author, particularly caring for her through her Alzheimer's.

Michael Howard was an army officer during the Second World War, he met John Bayley during this time and continued a friendship and correspondence with him afterwards.
