Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Alexander Ferrier was born in Scotland in 1790 . He moved to the Republic of Suriname (formerly known as Dutch Guiana) with his brother Robert and became a plantation owner. In 1829 he married Margaret Pearson and they had four children. He returned to Scotland in around 1835 where he built a private villa at Cardross, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, although he also owned Broomhill House. Following the collapse of the sugar trade in the 1840s , Alexander returned to the Republic of Suriname. He died during a voyage returning to Scotland around 1848.

This material was accumulated by descendants of Alexander Ferrier from a number of unknown sources, and deposited with Economic History Department, Glasgow University, in c1964. Management of the collection transferred to Glasgow University Archives in 1975.
