Scope and Content

Pope writes that he is sending the first volume of his version of Homer, with the Greek commentary of Eustathius for the recipient to translate. He adds that he has read Duport's Gnomologia Homerica (in a postscript, which repeats the information about Eustathius).

Administrative / Biographical History

A general outline of the life and works of the poet Alexander Pope can be found in the Dictionary of National Biography; there are also numerous biographical and critical evaluations. The Rev. William Broome, who assisted Pope with the translation of Homer's Odyssey, was the rector of Stuston (about a mile and a half from Diss) from 1713 to 1720.
