GB 231 MS 2795 Small collection of papers of George Findlay Shirras (1885-1955). Dating from the period c 1950 - c 1955 and covering the last professionally active years of his life, the collection contains a variety of notes and other material connected with his work, including some letters exchanged with various economists on the subject of the influence of Keynes' ideas of A.H. Abbati's books; and offprints of his articles and publications

Alexander (1880 - 1959), co-editor of Francis Carney Diack's The Inscriptions of Pictland: an essay on the sculptured and inscribed stones of the North-East and North of Scotland, with other writings and collections (Aberdeen: Third Spalding Club, 1944)

George Findlay Shirras was born in Aberdeen on 16 Jul 1885 and graduated from the University of Aberdeen, MA 1907. He entered the Indian Educational Service as Professor of Economics at Dacca College in 1909, and in 1914 was made first Director of Statistics in the Indian Government. In 1921 he was appointed Director of the Labour Office in the Government of Bombay, and from 1926 - 1940 was Principal and Professor of Economics at Gujarat College, Bombay. He returned to Britain in 1940, where he became Dean of the Faculty of Economics at University College, Exeter. This was followed by a short period as Professor of Political Economy at Dublin University, 1950 - 1951, and 2 years in the USA, as visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida.

The papers in GB 231 MS 2795 were extracted from G. Findlay Shirras' collections relating to Sir Isaac Newton, which had been given to King's College Library, Cambridge. They were gifted to the University of Aberdeen in Jun 1972, by A.N.L. Munby, Librarian, King's College, Cambridge, through the agency of R.P. Sturgess, Institute of Historical Research, University of London.

The letters in GB 231 MS 2876 were extracted from books belonging to G. Findlay Shirras, which were purchased by James G. Bisset Ltd., University Bookseller, Aberdeen in 1975. They were deposited in the University c Jun 1975.
