Papers of Sir Cyril T. Cripps (1892-1979) and Sir C. Humphrey Cripps (1915-2000) relating to their involvement with the University of Nottingham

This small collection consists of the following:

Several certificates including University of Nottingham honorary degree certificates, membership of the Royal Institute of Chemistry, and a plaque commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Cripps Chair of metallurgy at The University of Nottingham (MS 984/1).

A number of photographs relating to the involvement of the Cripps family with the University of Nottingham, including the founding of the Cripps' Chair of Metallurgy, and events at Cripps Hall and Cripps Health Centre (MS 984/2).

The Cripps family established the Cripps Foundation in 1956. The charity has made many large gifts to universities, colleges, schools, churches, hospitals and museums, including the University of Nottingham. Gifts to the University of Nottingham include funds towards the building of Cripps Hall of Residence, Cripps Health Centre and Cripps Computing Centre, and the establishment of a Cripps' Chair of Metallurgy and Production Engineering.

Sir Cyril Thomas Cripps (1892-1979), usually known as Cyril Cripps, established the family firm Pianoforte Supplies Limited in 1919. The firm made metal components for pianos, and subsequently grew into a major supplier of metal fittings for other trades, especially the motor industry.

Sir Cyril's son Sir Cyril Humphrey Cripps (1915-2000), usually known as Humphrey Cripps was educated at Northampton School For Boys and studied Natural Sciences at St John's College, Cambridge. He joined the family business, and became Managing Director in 1960 and Chairman in 1979.

The collection has been arranged into two separate groups, the first consisting of certificates and plaques, and the second consisting of photographs

Acquired from a member of the Cripps family in August 2016. This material was extracted from a larger delivery of material which related to the family's Pianoforte Company in Northamptonshire. It came to the University following the clearance of the Cripps family home in Northamptonshire. The business records are to be transferred to Northamptonshire Record Office.
