John Montague Spencer Stanhope was the eldest son of Sir Walter Thomas William Spencer Stanhope and his wife Elizabeth Julia, daughter of Sir John Jacob Buxton. In 1890 he married Ida May, daughter of Sir Lionel Milborne Swinnerton Pilkington of Chevet, Yorkshire
