SZ's involvement in the work of the Committee was a continuation of the work that he had directed at the OEMU. As well as participating in the deliberations of the Committee he, assisted by Peter Krohn at Birmingham University, carried out experimental work on its behalf, notably into the wound ballistics of small arms ammunition and into fragmentation of various weapons.

The Physics of Armaments Committee was established in 1946 To consider and advise on physical and related problems in the field of armaments [and] To report to the Armaments Research Advisory Board. The Committee was chaired by Sir Geoffrey Taylor and Solly Zuckerman was a founder member.
