This collection of printed papers was compiled by James W. Fowler, during his membership of the Scottish Schoolmasters' Association [S.S.A.]. The bulk of the papers are institutional records of the S.S.A., 1934 - 1963, and as such, relate to its internal organisation and relationships with allied bodies; but there are also printed papers produced by Government departments and other teachers' professional organisations, and newspaper cuttings, reports, etc. which contain information on developments and trends in education and teaching during the period 1935 - 1960.
Institutional records of the S.S.A. include minutes, 1935 - 1963; financial papers, 1934 - 1958; and correspondence, 1934 - 1960. There are also papers relating to the S.S.A.'s relationship with the Educational Institute of Scotland [E.I.S.], 1935 - 1946, and the National Association of Schoolmasters [N.A.S.], 1939 - 1957. An incomplete run of the S.S.A. journal, The Scottish Schoolmaster, 1935 - 1965, and pamphlets and circulars re. equal pay, negotiations with other bodies etc., 1935 - 1957, are also included, and there is a historical note on the Association, which was written by James Fowler for The Scottish Schoolmaster in November 1960.
Other printed papers accumulated by James Fowler include the N.A.S. journal, The New Schoolmaster (1935 - 1946), and the E.I.S. journal, E.I.S. quarterly (1935 - 1957). Individual and miscellaneous publications, pamphlets and newspaper cuttings relating to the profession are also represented.
