Administrative / Biographical History
The history of the Eisteddfod can be traced to a poetic competition held by Lord Rhys at Castell Ceredigion in 1176. The origins of the modern National Eisteddfod are sealed in the late 18th century. In 1789, The London Welsh Association decided to support small Eisteddfodau in pubs all over North Wales at the time. Iolo Morgannwg founded a society for poets and singers called the Gorsedd Bards of the British Isles in 1792 to replace the ancient Eisteddfod. The first-featured Eisteddfod was held at Primrose Hill, London. The first official National Eisteddfod was held in Aberdare in 1861. The most important Eisteddfod is the National Eisteddfod, the most competitive and musical festival in Europe. The eight days of competing took place in Welsh.
