Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Association of Poorhouse Governors of Scotland was formed in 1868 . One of its main functions apart from representing the interests of Governors, was to petition Government Ministers such as the Lord Advocate for changes in the poor law. The Association also maintained a register of all poorhouses in the country. As well as details of location this showed the names and salaries of governors and matrons and the number of staff and inmates, including lunatics. The association was extended to include matrons in 1922 and despite law changes affecting poorhouses in 1929, the last recorded AGM is in 1939. There is a subsequent entry in the Minute Book which records that executive powers were assumed by the Chair and the Secretary during the war years. The winding up of the Poor Law legislation was 1948 , so it would seem that the organisation would cease to exist at that date.
