Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Rev. William Pugh (1750-1845) became curate of Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, Merionethshire, in about 1774. He became the tenant at Argoed farm, Llanfair, part of the Caenest estate, Llanbedr. He married Mary Jones in 1777 and their 11 children included Hugh Pugh (1778-1817) and William Pugh (1791-1858). William was the only child to outlive his father and inherited the tenancy of Argoed. He was Income Tax collector for the parish of Llanbedr. He married Catherine Jones (1794-1865) and their eight children included W. W. (William) Pugh (1822-1893) who farmed Argoed after his father. His son, Richard Jones Pugh (1864-1939) farmed Argoed and Caenest but then moved to Bontddu, Merionethshire. W. Eric Pugh was his son.
