Poesais Profasas a Diversos Asumptos

A collection of sixty-nine poetical manuscripts written in various hands during the first and second halves of the seventeenth century, and including many corrected autograph drafts. The table of contents and headings are in an early eighteenth-century hand, and the binding dates from the same period. The volume includes sonnets by Gngora and at least three poems by D. Antonio Pedro Sancho Dvila y Osorio, 4th Marquis of Velada. Most of the named poems in the collection occur in the first manuscript, which has 122 leaves. The rest of the volume is comprised largely of anonymous poems written on single sheets. Many of the later poems are probably unpublished works by the Marquis of Velada's aristocratic friends. They include several corrected drafts. The authors named in the volume include Rodrigo de Alanis, Lupercio Leonardo de Argensola, Fray Hortensio Felix Paravicino de Arteaga, Fr. Juan de Avellaneda, Melchor de Fonseca y Almeida, Franciso de Benavides Manrique, Sebastian de Briones, Jos Carrillo, P. Valentn Cspedes, Juan de Espaa y Moncada, Maestro Felices, Dr Felipe Godinez, Juan de Juregui, the Marquesa de Legans, Antontio Lpez de Vega, Francisco Lpez de Zrate, Juan de Matos Fragoso, Pedro de Maza, Antonio de Mendoza, P. Maestro Fr. Diego Niceno, Juan de Orozco, Pedro de la Pea, Juan Prez de Montalvn, Pedro Rosete, Luis de Ulloa y Pereyra, Antonio de las Varillas, Lope de Vega, Cristbal de Velasco y de la Cueva, Pedro de Vesga, the Marqus del Villar, Francisco de Vitoria and Fr. Juan de Vitoria. There are two royal contributors: Philip IV and the Infante D. Carlos.

The volume was originally MS 25861 in the collection of Jeremiah Hill. It was acquired subsequently by Sir Thomas Phillipps, and was part of the sale of his library at Sotheby's in 1976. Purchased by the Library at Sotheby's, 28 June 1976.
