Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
From the very beginnings of military warfare communication could often hold the keys to victory. Communicating with your allies while knowing where your enemies are is one of the most crucial parts in war. Military communication has evolved throughout the ages from flaming arrows, drum beats, smoke signals, messenger pigeons, to modern satellite enabled communication devices. During the First World War communication technology was changing very quickly. For the first time, much of the world was using electricity, and this new source of power was utilized for communication in the form of telegraphs, telephones, signal lamps, and radio. A telegram is a message sent by telegraph and then delivered in written or printed form. The message was carried along wires, and the text written or printed and delivered by hand or teleprinter. Telegrams were very widely used, because private telephones were not usual. The idea was developed by the British Post Office as a service for urgent letters.
