Turton Papers

Deeds, with a few family papers, relating to land at Middleton St. George and Middleton One Row, Co. Durham, belonging to the Killinghall family, in which the Place, Routh, Pemberton and Cocks families also had interests. Deeds relating to land also at Dinsdale, Sadbury (Sadberge), Sockburn, Blackwell, Egglescliffe, and Trafforth (Trafford) Co. Durham and Barton, North Yorkshire.

Middleton St George and Middleton One Row (also referred to as Nether or Low, and Over or Upper Middleton respectively) in the south of Co. Durham were part of the Wapentake of Sadberge which was a jurisdiction within the Palatinate of Durham. The Killinghall family held land in the Middletons from the end of the fourteenth century until the eighteenth century, with a break in the family line during the reign of Elizabeth I. After this, the estate descended to the Pemberton family. Dinsdale, west of the Middletons, passed from the Place family in 1719 to Cuthbert Routh, whose four daughters sold it to the Lambton family. These property transactions gave rise to much of the material in this collection, and can be found further described, with pedigrees, in Surtees, The history and antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham ... (1816-40) vol. III, 221-36.

The first deposit has been divided into four groups, and the second deposit was treated as a fifth group. Each group is listed in chronological order. The first group broadly relates to land at Middleton St George, the second to Middleton One Row, the third to miscellaneous properties in which the Killinghall family had an interest, while the fourth contains Killinghall family papers not directly related to their main estates, but there is much overlapping of material between the groups.

Deposited in 1958 by Mr. Ralph Turton of Low Middleton Hall, Middleton St. George, with an additional deposit of 24 items by the hand of his grand-daughter in 1980, when Mr. Turton lived at Kildale Hall, Whitby, North Yorkshire.
