Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
José Anjo was for many years the Portuguese Consul in Antigua. In 1897 he was advertising postcards in the 'Antigua Standard' whilst based in the High Street, St Johns, Antigua. In 1899 he photographed hurricane damage in the Leeward Islands for the acting Governor and in 1899, 1900 and 1901 he made photographic visits to Dominica. In 1903 Anjo was appointed agent for Rochester Optical and Camera Company. In 1905 his premises and 15 years' worth of negatives were destroyed in a fire at 31 High Street, but despite this he continued trading from Anthony Anjo's 'The People's Grocery'. He was possibly bankrupt by 1907 as there was a public auction of his assets, but had resumed photographic work by 1913.
