Scope and Content

Comprising: 151 volumes and bundles containing predominantly extracts from parish registers, wills, manorial court rolls and printed works relating to families with the surname of Sykes and families related to them, mostly in Yorkshire, and correspondence with other genealogists; a volume of original and copy letters (not genealogical) 1710-1866, including eight relating to Godfrey Higgins of Skellow (volume 13) and a memorandum book of (Sir) Isaac Morley of Doncaster 1825-1833, and index of surnames to the Yorkshire poll book of 1741 by William Paver, with a photograph of Paver 1856 (volume 59) and extracts from court rolls by Alfred Scott Gatty (volumes 50-52). Genealogical papers of T Ince of the office of the West Riding clerk of the peace, Wakefield, mostly relating to Derbyshire families (10 volumes)

Administrative / Biographical History

John Sykes MD FSA (1817-1901) was a Doncaster physician and genealogist who accumulated a substantial collection of genealogical notes on his own family name. Sykes' papers also include research undertaken by other genealogists. The entire collection was indexed by surname by F L Smith.
