The Beckingsale papers

The Beckingsale papers form part of a large collection of deeds and documents formerly belonging to the firm of D. Roy Evans and partners, Solicitors Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire. The collection was accumulated by several generations of lawyers practising in Newcastle Emlyn since the first half of the nineteenth century. In the main, the contents deal with land and property transfers, wills and probate matters, litigation in Petty Sessions and the Higher Courts, as well as a few rentals and accounts of the Llysnewydd estate.

Although the material comes under the main heading of five counties in Wales and two in England, it focuses on the diverse and interesting practice of a family of solicitors in the north west Carmarthenshire market town of Newcastle Emlyn. Another portion of

the D. Roy Evans collection was deposited by Mr. Evans at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth in 1932 and a copy of the schedule of the items therein is available for perusal in the Carmarthen Record Office. In April 1977, Mrs. Beckingsale made an additional deposit at the Carmarthen Record Office of a small but very important group of family papers - diaries, photographs and other personalia relating to Allen Raine (Mrs. Anna Adelisa Puddicombe 1836-1908), pedigrees of the Evans family of Llwyncadfor and Newcastle Emlyn, Long Price of Talley, notes on David Davis, Castell Hywel etc. and these are listed at the end of this schedule

The schedule is arranged alphabetically under the headings of counties, parishes and properties, holdings, houses etc. within those parishes.
