Administrative / Biographical History

Gwent County Council was established in 1974 following local government reorganisation. It assumed the administrative functions of the former Monmouthshire County Council, Newport County Borough Council and part of Brecknockshire County Council. The Council comprised 63 members, including a chairman, and served a population of 450,000 people. The Council's work was overseen by a number of committees, including Finance, Education, Highways, Personnel, Planning & Economic Development, Police, Policy & Review, Public Protection, Social Services and Property Services. The principal officers employed by the Council were the Chief Executive, County Treasurer, Director of Education, Director of Social Services, Director of Planning and Economic Development, County Engineer & Surveyor, Director of Property Services, Chief Fire Officer, County Trading Standards Officer, County Supplies Officer, County Building & Works Officer and the Public Relations & Information Officer. Gwent County Council was abolished in 1996 and its functions assumed by the new Monmouthshire, Torfaen, Newport, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly unitary authorities.
