Scope and Content

Eisteddfod essays, dating from 1898 to 1904 on various subjects e.g. the Educational Awakening in Wales, Wales in the 19th century, the work of Daniel Owen, brief notes on the notable Welsh, 1700-1900.

A history of the religious establishment, Tan'rallt, in Caernarfon, now known as Siloh, 1875-1876. A gorsedd certificate of the 1890 Eisteddfod. A lecture on the subject of famous people buried at Llanycil cemetery, Merioneth. An address on the occasion of the departure of Gwenallt as minister at Bagillt Church. A marriage and death certificate, and an apprenticeship indenture for Thomas Jones as a printer, 1872. 9 photographs of Gwenallt, ca. 1885-1930

There is also material collated by Gwenallt relating to Rev. Evan Jones, Caernarfon, minister at Moriah Chapel and editor of Punch Cymraeg and material relating to Roger Edwards, Mold, such as quotes from newspapers and letters.

Also, verses written by W. H. Williams, Penmachno to my dear friend Rev. T. M. Jones in the first house of friendship, 5 September 1899.

Administrative / Biographical History

Rev. Thomas Morris Jones, born in 1859 in Caernarfon, was a Methodist minister, journalist and writer. His first ministry was at Bagillt, Flintshire where he served between 1885 and 1889. Amongst his most well known publications are Llenyddiaeth fy ngwlad on the subject of the history of the Welsh newspaper and periodical, and a biography of the Rev. Roger Edwards of Mold.

Rev. Thomas Morris Jones was known by the epithet, Gwenallt. He married Elizabeth Roberts of Bagillt on 1 August 1888 and was succeeded by a son and two daughters. He died in 1933.

Arrangement

Papers received at different occasions and thus incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts separately. They have been arranged according to subject or chronologically where possible.
