Scope and Content

Contains a letter from Sir Cloudesley Shovell to Wm Wright Esq, Commissioner of her Majesty's dockyard, Plymouth regarding the ship 'The Winchester' [letter dated 17 June 1703].

Also includes a manuscript copy of the financial accounts of the Conservators of the River Tone, Somerset between 1707 and 1798. The accounts cover the financial year up to 24 June and were required by an act of parliament to be presented annually before the Bishop of Bath and Wells and the Justices of the Peace.

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Cloudesley Shovell [Nov 1650 - 22 Oct 1707] was a naval officer who participated in the Nine Year's War, and the War of the Spanish Succession. Cloudesley served as MP for Rochester from 1695 to 1701 and from 1705 until his death in a shipwreck in the Isles of Scilly in 1707.
