Scope and Content

Six journals of John Allen Giles, which were written retrospectively, mostly in 1878, from contemporary notes kept by Giles, including descriptions of journeys and visits. Each journal includes original letters to Giles which have been pasted in, as well as transcripts of letters to and from Giles. Each letter has been numbered by Giles. Each journal also contains a large number of newscuttings, autographs, photographs (many in MSS. Eng. b. 2101-2), drawings (mainly topographical, and mainly in MS. Eng. b. 2098), and printed ephemera, pasted into it.

The journals were given to the Library by Miss. M. Marjorie Chetham, through David Bromwich, in 2000.

The Journals have been published as The Diary and Memoirs of John Allen Giles, edited by David Bromwich, Somerset Record Society, 86 (Taunton, 2000), Bodleian reference: R. Top. 375 (86), which also prints the texts of the inserted and the transcribed letters (but does not reproduce the drawings and photographs).
