Collection of loose prints, most measuring approximately 40 x 55 mm., with annotations and identifications on the reverse by H.B. Thomas. The collection consists of a portrait of Hannington (1884) and seven small snapshots showing the unveiling of the Hannington Memorial near Jinja in 1939. Y3045N/1 is by Lombardi and Co.
James Hannington (1847-1885) first went out to Africa as a leader of a mission party in 1882 but was invalided home to England the following year. In 1884 he was consecrated first Bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa and in 1885 again set out for Uganda. He attempted to reach the country by the Masai route and after some difficulties reached Busaga. By this time however Mutesa had been replaced by Mwanga as Kabaka of Buganda and Hannington and most of his porters were murdered on the King's orders by Luba near his stockade outside Jinja.
