Llanelli Soroptimists papers

The collection contains photograph albums depicting various members and past presidents and many of the charity functions organised by the Soroptimist International Club Llanelli. Framed Club chain of office and Certificate of Constitution as well as programmes of several events and lunches. It also includes a series of correspondences relating to the support and schooling of a child at a Chrisitan Mission Home in Bangladesh.

The Soroptimist name was coined from the Latin soro meaning sister and optima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as ‘the best for women’. Founded in Oakland California in 1921 there are currently 3000 clubs throughout the world. The first Soroptimist International Club in Wales was Swansea in 1933 followed by Llanelli in 1937.
