Scope and Content

This collection contains two nursing certificates of Violet Ethel Hancock: a Metropolitan Asylums Board certificate of two years training, October 1922 and a General Nursing Council for England & Wales (GNC) fever nursing registration certificate dated June 1925. Also, a Fever Nurses' Association, schedule of ward work booklet, signed off as experience in each task was gained - starts in late 1919. The collection includes papers relating to Hancock's time as a Union Castle Line stewardess; a baby weight card in the name Haines from April 1929 and a visitors pass to the Rachel Wards, the London Hospital, Whitechapel Road, London. Also, two pamphlets from the GNC: Rules and the instructions for the state registered nurses' uniform.

Added to the collection later: Metropolitan Asylums Board, North Western Hospital, official testimonial for probationer and staff nurse, Violet Hancock (1919-1927) and receipts from General Nursing Council for registration (1925-1931).

[NB two certificates in plan chest.]

Three photographs of Violet Hancock, in uniform, on the deck of a large ship, presumably taken while she worked for the Union Castle Line in 1928. One photograph shows her alone, one with a colleague in a deck chair and one with a little girl. [AltRefNo P/18/1/175]
