Administrative / Biographical History
In 1870 John Somerville purchased a textile business in David Street, Bridgeton, and started manufacturing tarpaulins. The business moved to Eastfield, Rutherglen in 1873.
The business expanded from producing only tarpaulins to manufacturing flax and jute products, the main product being brattice cloth which was shipped worldwide. During World War I and World War II the company started producing webbing and belts for the armed forces.
The company was named Somerville & Morrison and became a limited company in 1936 following the investment of a family friend, Dr Tom Morrison. Somerville & Morrison moved premesis to 24 Bardonald Street, Rutherglen in 2004. At this time it made many different products, including bitumen laminates (bitumastic papers), waxed laminates (creped papers), waxed kraft (engineering papers), corrugated papers and a number of products used within the sector of the Ministry of Defence.
The company was always run by the Somerville family, with the last directors being Tom Somerville, John Somerville's great grandson, and his wife Valerie. The company went into liquidation in 2010 and their manufacturing facility is now under the control of MetPro Ltd, packaging materials manufacturers.
