Correspondence covers Thomas Adkins first tour of duty in China between the summer of 1855 and February of 1865 when he came home on his first leave. Also correspondence from his second tour of duty between 1867 and 1873, together with one letter addressed to his niece Alice in 1876. In addition, two documents dating from 1879, including details of his retirement aged 44 due to ill health.
