Administrative / Biographical History

Industry Year 1986 was a national initiative established by The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in London to increase understanding of the role of industry and its service to the community. Industry Year activity was divided by regions and then by county.

Nottinghamshire's county co-ordinator was Mr Phil Harvey, employed at Plessey Systems in Beeston, Nottinghamshire. General and executive committees were set up to co-ordinate the county's activities and within them, working groups investigated relations between schools and industry, ran competitions and organised conferences. During 1986, the county's industry sector joined with local colleges and schools in a number of initiatives to help promote industry.

The University of Nottingham was an active partner in the Industry Year campaign. John Webb was the University's industrial liaison officer at the time.
